Top 5 Summer Movie Releases to Get Excited About in 2017

Limiting this list to five entries is almost unfair. 2017 is stacked with amazing film releases, so don’t imagine that just because you don’t see a specific title on this list that you shouldn’t still watch it. Between great new horror stories, fantastic originals, sequels we’ve all been waiting for, and additions to the new wave of movie universes, everyone has something to get excited about this summer. In no particular order, here are our top picks for what we think you shouldn’t miss this summer.

Dunkirk

Even including War of the Planet of the Apes on this list, Dunkirk promises to still be the darkest entry here, and what else should we expect from the director of The Dark Knight trilogy? Part of what makes it so dark, as well as so anticipated, is the fact that it’s a true story. Numerous movies have been made surrounding World War II, yet none attempted to tell the tale of the incredible story that happened at Dunkirk. Without giving too much away, approximately 330,000 allied troops were trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk with Germany on one side and the ocean on the other, making them incredibly vulnerable while Great Britain and safety lied almost within eyesight across the water. The movie is a dramatization of the evacuation that took place, involving hundreds of privately-owned boats desperately rescuing the men.

Spiderman: Homecoming

Among the great divides in this country lies a lesser-known divide: is Andrew Garfield or Tobey Maguire the real Spider-Man? The answer: neither, and if you’ve seen Captain America: Civil War, you know why. Tom Holland is the latest actor to portray the web-slinger, and his portrayal is the greatest thing to happen to the superhero genre in years. A collaboration between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios as a part of Marvel’s box-office-dominating cinematic universe, including Tony Stark/Iron Man throughout the story, this movie promises to be as fun as it will be epic.

Wonder Woman

It’s about time. Marvel currently stands at 0/14 for female superheroes in their movies, but DC has only released 2 so far, and the 3rd is Wonder Woman. Even if the rest of their universe has been sub-par so far, well done to them! To be fair, Marvel does plan to release Captain Marvel, which features a female superhero, but that’s a while off and it’ll be their 21st film.

In this movie, Wonder Woman, played by the ever-lovely Gal Gadot, has to leave her secluded home populated by female warriors in order to save the world from itself as World War I rages on. I’m not sure a more female-positive movie could possibly be made without being preachy. Plus, who isn’t excited to see Chris Pine’s baby blues as he plays her love interest, Steve Trevor?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

I know there are a disproportionately high number of superhero films on this list, but what did you expect in a world where the box-office battle between DC Entertainment and Marvel Studios dominates the theaters? This next addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings back everyone’s favorite misfits, the Guardians of the Galaxy, as they attempt to, you know, guard the galaxy. We can’t wait to get the brilliant mixture of action and comedy that only the Guardians, and Chris Pratt if we’re honest, can promise. The heroes find Starlord’s father in this installment, and we can’t wait to see the brilliant banter between the father-son pair of Pratt and Curt Russel. The most exciting part though: baby Groot. If you haven’t watched the trailer yet, please do. Baby Groot will change your life the moment you lay eyes on the little guy.

War of the Planet of the Apes

People weren’t sure what to expect when 20th Century Fox announced the Planet of the Apes prequels. After all, the reboot didn’t go so well to put it lightly. Few movie series have had both fans and critics in such agreement as this, however. It’s beloved, and its dark and gritty tone perfectly matches the subject material. Some might have had an issue with whether to take the movie seriously, and who can blame them since it’s about apes with human intelligence taking over Earth, but this series succeeds in making you take it seriously and even rooting for the apes over the humans as it ponders difficult questions. We can’t wait to see what the next installment has in store for us.
