What to Expect From The 2016 SAG Awards

We’re already geared up for The 2016 Oscars on February 28, 2016, but before that big night, we have another film awards ceremony to get through: The SAG Awards. The 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards recognizes outstanding performances not only film, but also primetime television. So while we can expect many honors given to films we’ve already seen have Oscars nods, primetime television actors will also get their time in the spotlight.

Many of the films performances this year being recognized at the SAG Awards are based off of real-life people and stories, giving those films and television shows the upperhand. While we just have to wait and see the results, here are the wins we are expecting to see:

Film – Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role

It would be weird to see anyone but Leonardo DiCaprio take this win. We can expect him to pull off a win in this catagory for his performance in the “The Revenant.” There are, however, many other actors that could take the win for their performances, including Michael Fassbender for his role in “Steve Jobs,” or Bryan Cranston for his role in ‘Trumbo.”

Film – Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role

One of the most talked about movies this year already has been “Room.” Actress Brie Larson plays Ma in “Room,” and her performance will likely receive a win as we move forward to The Oscars where I’m sure she’ll snag a win there, too.

Film – Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture

For this catagory, the Screen Actors Guild recognizes a full cast for their performances. It’s likely we’ll see “The Big Short” take this win given its cast is full of well-known actors with amazing performances and chemistry. However, “Spotlight” could also take the win here. Both films are based off of true stories, giving them each a competitive advantage against other nominees in this catagory. Critics love to see actors portray real-life people, because it takes a lot of research and understanding of that person to fully portray them and give that person justice. This one will be a toss up, but you can expect a win from one of these two.

Television – Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series

“House of Cards” leading actor Kevin Spacey is front-runner for this catagroy given his extensive performances throughout the Netflix series, but Jon Hamm from “Mad Men” could also sneak up on Spacey to receive the win instead. Hamm received wins at the Emmy Awards and the Golden Globes, so we could see him snag another at the SAG Awards, too. “Mad Men” ended in 2015, so this will also be the last time to honor Hamm’s performance as Don Draper.

Television – Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series

This catagory will be a toss up of who might win. “Game of Thrones” is likely the front-runner, not only because they have dominated this catagory for the past four years, but also because their recent season created quite a stir with critics and fans (if you are unsure what I’m referring to, you’ll have to watch the series). “Marvel’s Daredevil” could take the win here instead for its action performances, but don’t hold your breath. You can’t compete with “Game of Thrones.”

There are many more catagories for the SAG Awards. See the rest of the nominations here.

The 22nd Annual SAG Awards will take place tomorrow, Saturday 30, 2016 at 8 p.m.
