The World Remembers Music Legend, David Bowie
Music legend David Bowie’s last album was released only days before his passing. There have already been countless tributes to the musician that brought music and great memories to so many lives.
Bowie had battled liver cancer for 18 months, and sadly passed yesterday, January 10, 2016. It’s clear that he had never given up on his life’s work. He had released his latest album, Blackstar, on Friday. Fans are speculating whether this ablum was a goodbye from the late English musician. His recent music video highlights illness, death, and heaven.
That is exactly what Bowie did, however. He always made everything a work of art. His long-time friend and producer said in a statement, “His death was no different from his life – a work of art. He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift.”
Bowie’s career spanned over 51 years. He had many accomplishments, record album sales, and one of the most supportive fan bases. Here’s a closer look at what he contributed to his life’s work:
- Albums sold: 140 million since 1967
- Singles: created more 111 singles, more than two a year
- Music videos: 51, along with film roles
- Studio albums: 25, including his most recent, Blackstar
Bowie is known as the “Picasso” of pop. He was a man of art, innovation, and a true visionary. Bowie is grouped with other famous musicians, like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Elvis, defining a generation of music, pop, and art. He had altered the music industry when he revealed an alter ego of himself in 1972–Ziggy Stardust. You might recognize Ziggy as the vibrantly-colored, red-head version of Bowie with a red and blue lightning bolt across his face. He had started a new phase of music: Glam Rock.
Several celebrities have taken to Twitter to remember the late pop musician.
“David Bowie was one of my most important inspirations, so fearless, so creative, he gave us magic for a lifetime.” – Rapper Kanye West
“Talented . Unique. Genius. Game Changer. The Man who Fell to Earth. Your Spirit Lives on Forever!” – Musician Madonna
Fans have been sharing their memories online, as well as their memories of meeting the famous musician who has touched so many lives. A retrospective of Bowie’s life is staged at the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands, opening its door today to fans who would like to pay tribute to the star.
