Classic Disney Remakes & Sequels Set for 2016

Disney is a powerhouse of movie franchises as well as an innovator in new film releases every year. When a film does phenomenal in theaters and receives incredible feedback from critics and fans, it’s certain that a sequel is likely to take place…most likely 10 years later, though. Disney isn’t quick to release remakes and sequels, but if they do, they make certain to do just as brilliant of a job they did the first time around.

If you recall, it took Disney Pixar 11 years before releasing the third installment of Toy Story. It has taken Disney Pixar 13 years before Finding Dory, the sequal to Finding Nemo.

Disney is also revealing reboots of its classic films, but in live-action form. Think: Alice in Wonderland (2010)Maleficent (2014), and Cinderella (2015). The Little Mermaid is set to become a live-action film (through Universal, however) with Chloe Grace Mortez recently revealing she will play Ariel.

Here are some Disneysequels and live-action films you can prepare for in 2016:

The Jungle Book

Live-Action Remake
Distributor: Walt Disney Pictures
Release Date: April 15, 2016

Remember Mowgli? This live-action film takes us on his journey of self-discovery. The Jungle Book is a classic adventure about a man-cub who has been raised by a family of wolves, but when a fearsome tiger decides to make Mowgli his enemy because he is simply a man, Mowgli must embark on an epic adventure, meeting friends along the way–including panther Bagheera and a free-spirited bear Baloo.

This film will be much darker than the brightly-colored, vibrant original cartoon we are used to. Prepare for a wild journey.

Alice Through the Looking Glass

Live-Action Sequel

This is a prequel to the original Alice in Wonderland live-action film from Disney that was released in 2010. Now, we revisit Alice as she returns to Underland and travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter. For the past few years, she has been sailing the high seas, following in her father’s footsteps. When she comes across a magical looking glass, she has the ability to return to the whimsical realm of Underland to meet all of her magical friends once again. This film is a race to save the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp).

Finding Dory

Distributor: Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animations Studios
Release Date: June 17, 2016

We all remember the beautifully-told tale of how Merlin (the little clown fish) went on a huge adventure with Dory to find an even smaller clown fish, Nemo. This time, it’s Dory’s turn. While we are revisiting the tale 13 years later from the original film, the film takes place 1 year after the original film. The fish friends are set along the California coastline, welcoming a brand new list of characters.

The Finding Dory trailer was released just yesteraday with a film poster to go along with it. From the looks of it, Dory tries to go back to her roots to find her family, thus getting lost and starting a whole new meaningful adventure.
