2016 People’s Choice Awards Nominations Are In

Award season is an extensive time of year where we have everything from the Video Music Awards to the Country Music Awards, and the Tony’s to the Oscars. We’ve just barely skimmed the surface of award shows. Moving its way into 2016, People’s Choice Awards will air on CBS on January 6 at 9/8c. Unlike many other award shows that are judged by professionals, reviewers, and critics, the People’s Choice Awards is voted by the people (which goes without saying).

Categories include an extenstive list, such as Favorite Movie, Favorite Movie Actor/Actress, Favorite Action Movie, Favorite TV Show (in a variety of genres), Favorite Daytime TV Host, as well as Favorite Artist and Favorite Song.

Nominees were announced today at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills. The nominees were led by Scarlett Johansson, Melissa McCarthy, and Sandra Bullock–each who received several nominations. These aren’t the only Hollywood female actress to receive a few nods. Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway are up for Favorite Movie Actress. As for the men, Channing Tatum, Robert Downey Jr., and Johnny Depp are battling it out for Favorite Movie Actor.

In the TV genre, hilarious and charming Sofia Vergara leads in the categories. For music, no surprise that country-turned-pop queen Taylor Swift is nominated for Favorite Pop Artist, alongside squad member Selena Gomez.

The question now stands–who will take home the gold? A lot of celebrities look to the People’s Choice Awards as a different form of celebration and recognition. They receive these awards based on a checklist of things–a dedicated fanbase, how involved they are with their fans, the content they produce, and (in some cases), simply how mainstream the star is. At the end of the day, award shows like the Oscars and GrammyAwards mean a lot because that is when the celebrities are “really graded” on their work–but I think what counts is receiving recogition from the people they make their shows, music, or movies for.
