21st Annual SAG Awards

The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be held on January 25, but the nominations came out just this past Wednesday. Recognizing outstanding performances in film and primetime television, these awards are incredibly prestigious and are often an indicator of success at the Academy Awards.

The award is a statuette of a nude male figure holding a mask of comedy and a mask of tragedy. It is called “The Actor” and is 16 inches tall and weighs over 12 lbs. It is cast in solid bronze, produced by the American Fine Arts Foundry in Burbank, California.

These nominations are not just chosen by chance. Two committees, one for film and one for television, are randomly selected each year to cast the nominations. These committees have 2,100 people on each one, chosen from the 165,000 that are part of the full membership of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). All of the members can then vote on the nominations to decide the winners.

Alec Baldwin and Julianna Marguiles have the most overall wins with 8 each. Tina Fey has 5 awards and Steve Carell has 3. Edie Falco has the most nominations at 21, with Alec Baldwin in second with 20. American Beauty, Chicago, and The Help each have had 3 wins in various categories for the actors.

This year, there are some big names as nominations, including Jennifer Aniston and Michael Keaton. Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role will go to one of the following actresses: Jennifer Aniston in Cake, Felicity Jones in The Theory of Everything, Julianne Moore in Still Alice, Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl, or Reese Witherspoon in Wild. The award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role has just as big of names. Those nominees are Steve Carell for his performance in Foxcatcher, Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game, Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler, Michael Keaton in Birdman, and Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything.

SAG’s Life Achievement Award will be going to Debbie Reynolds, 82, who starred in Singin’ in the Rain and The Unsinkable Molly Brown.
