Seven Registry Items You Didn’t Think Of

When you and your fiancé registered for your wedding gifts, what did you ask for? Something traditional like a blender, a slow cooker or a toaster oven? Something romantic like a gift card to the spa at your honeymoon resort? Despite the fact that you got everything you wanted, you may have missed out on a few useful items that you later had to buy for yourself. Newly-engaged couples, take note! Here are seven of the best registry items that everyone forgets about!

  1. Cleaning gadgets: Register for a portable vacuum to stow in the living room closet, a full-sized vacuum (especially if you have pets that shed), an iron, a clothes steamer (ask for a portable steamer if you travel frequently), or an air purifier. These gifts aren’t glamorous, but they are certainly useful. Think of how nice it would be to take a travel steamer with you on all of those work trips!
  2. Bedding: Sheet sets are one of those practical things that nobody wants to buy, but everyone needs. Having a variety of bed sheets is a luxury that not many people appreciate. (I went through college with one set of bed sheets – to me, it’s a luxury simply to have more than one set.) Heavy flannel sheets are glorious in the cold winter months, while crisp cotton and light jersey sheets are ideal for warmer summer nights. Couples should register for each kind, so they can diversify their linen closet.
  3. Extra glasses: Movers aren’t gentle, accidents happen, and sometimes gravity just has a stronger pull than normal. Whatever the reason, glasses break all the time. If you are planning on purchasing a set of wine, beer, juice or water glasses for the happy couple, make sure to purchase a few extra. If you are registering for a set of glasses, add a few to your registry, just to be safe.
  4. Storage space: This one is a no-brainer. Everyone needs somewhere to store their stuff! You won’t get that Pinterest-perfect living room without a closet full of bins and shelves to hide all the junk that doesn’t belong. Register for shelving units, bins, tubs, bookshelves, or even a storage bench for your mudroom (classy!).
  5. Chef knives: This is a classic gift that lasts forever and never goes out of style. A set of high-quality knives is an invaluable addition to any kitchen, regardless of culinary interest or skill level. Often overlooked, knives play a huge role in food preparation, so picking out some nice knives that will last a long time is a must.
  6. Seasonal items: Think of things like Christmas lights and ornaments, gardening tools, menorahs, or a barbecue. Many people overlook these items, especially if they are registering out of season (registering in the winter and forget to shop for summer items, etc.). Remember the rest of the year and pick out some useful tools and knickknacks that come and go with the seasons.
  7. A few fun items: Don’t be afraid to register for something you and your fiancé can use on your downtime! Don’t go overboard – your registry can’t be composed entirely of fishing rods and video game consoles – but feel free to throw in a few items you know you could use. Avoid electronic equipment like digital cameras or Blu Ray players, as these products are continuously updated and improved. Good items are things like a tent, board games, or maybe even a dog crate, if you plan to expand your family soon.
