5 Reasons to Follow Hillary Clinton on Twitter

Everyone’s (well, not everyone’s) favorite former first lady & Secretary of State Hillary Clinton joined Twitter this week, and she has already amassed 430,000 followers. If you haven’t already followed the pantsuit queen, here are a few reasons why you should.

1. She’s remarkably self-aware.

Hill’s bio does a great job of summing up her entire life story in acronyms and tongue-in-cheek titles. Under her handle, Hillary describes herself as “Wife, mom, lawyer, women & kids advocate, FLOAR, FLOTUS, US Senator, SecState, author, dog owner, hair icon, pantsuit aficionado, glass ceiling cracker, TBD…” We’re particularly impressed by the new acronym FLOAR (First Lady of Arkansas) and by the way she owns the well-deserved title of pantsuit aficionado. Anyone who has that good of a grasp on their own identity is sure to produce some stellar tweets. And let’s face it, no matter which side of the political aisle you sit on, we’re all pretty interested to see what that “TBD” ends up being.

2. Family dynamics.

Hillary was welcomed to the twittersphere by daughter Chelsea and, of course, husband Bill. So far, Hillary has only followed these two, the Clinton Foundation, and the Clinton Global Initiative. One of the great American pastimes is speculating what kind of weird power dynamics occur between Hill and Bill, so it’s worth watching to see what happens on Twitter. After all, we all love reading far too much into what people say on the Internet.

3. She’s Internet savvy.

Hillary knows what the people of the Internet want. After taking a million photos in front of the American flag in her life, she had plenty of options when it came to choosing a profile picture. And what did she go with? The delightful shot of her checking her Blackberry while wearing sunglasses that went viral on Tumblr. She even dedicated her first tweet to the people that made that happen, the authors of the page Texts from Hillary Clinton. Her first tweet read “Thanks for the inspiration @ASmith83 & @Sllambe – I’ll take it from here…”

4. Twitter campaigns?

Twitter and other social media sites have started to play a huge role in political campaigns and social movements in the U.S. While Hillary’s future in the political arena is still TBD, we all know that she is far from retired. Hillary has already proved that she’s more tech savvy and up to date than a lot of politicians, so it could be really interesting to see how her Twitter plays into her future plans.

5. Girl power.

Hillary has 430,000 follower after just two days on Twitter, which is pretty impressive. But hubby Bill has 770,000, and that just doesn’t sit well with me. By following Hillary Clinton, you’re really empowering the entire female gender. Maybe.

In conclusion, by following Hillary Clinton, you’re empowering women, watching history be made, and getting to enjoy a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman. So just click the little bird, already.
