Most people think all celebrities skipped getting their college degree and went straight from childhood to an acting career or if they did go to college it was for a degree in acting. Many celebrity actors did work their way into stardom without having to get a college degree, however, there are also several actors and actresses who went to some of the most prestigious universities in the country and majored in studies that were the complete opposite of acting. Here are 7 celebrities who not only attended college, but earned surprising degrees.

1. Kevin Costner

Before Kevin Costner made a name for himself in big screen hits such as Dragonfly, Dances with Wolves and Waterworld, he was earning his degree in Business from California State University at Fullerton. Costner put his degree to use by working for a marketing firm before making it big in Hollywood.

2. Will Ferrell

Will Ferrell was preparing for his role as Ron Burgundy, in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, long before he got the part. Ferrell earned a bachelor’s degree in Sports Information from the University of Southern California. While interning in the sports department at a local television station he decided he didn’t want to do broadcasting and instead worked several jobs such as a teller at Wells Fargo, before getting his first break in acting which was on Saturday Night Live.

3. Jodie Foster

Jodie Foster is an award winning actress who began her acting career at the age of three; however, she did not let her acting career interfere with her education. Foster attended Yale University where she graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Literature and she is fluent in three languages, French, English and Italian and understands German.

4. Tommy Lee Jones

Oscar winner Tommy Lee Jones is also a graduate of Harvard where he earned his degree in English. While attending Harvard University, Jones was roommates with two other well-known people, former vice-president Al Gore and John Lithgow.

5. Dolph Lundgren

Dolph Lundgren is best known as Ivan Drago, his role as the Russian boxer in Rocky IV and most recently for his role in “The Expendables”. It is also rumored that Lundgren has an I.Q. of more than 160. Lundgren not only speaks seven languages, is fluent in three, but he graduated at the top of his class, with a Masters in Chemical Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology and a degree in Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

6. Natalie Portman

Oscar winner, Natalie Portman has proven that both beauty and brains are important. Portman graduated from Harvard University in 2003 with a B.A. in psychology. Following her graduation from Harvard, she took graduate courses at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She is fluent in Hebrew, has studied Japanese and French, and once commented to the New York Post “I don’t care if college ruins my career, I’d rather be smart than a movie star.”

7. Brooke Shields

Brooke Shields is also an acting legend who has both beauty and brains. Shields broke into acting at a young age and already starred in hit movies such as “The Blue Lagoon”, before leaving her acting career to attend Princeton University. Not only did Brooke Shields earn a bachelor’s degree in French Literature while attending one of the most prestigious colleges in the country, but she graduated with honors as well.
